Dear Children of the Future,
While you grew up and we preached to you the ideals of fairness and equality, please note that we were taking out loans in your name and you will be required to work your entire lives to pay them. While we pretended to be your caretakers, our long term plan was actually to take advantage of you in every way possible. We feigned a belief that the money we borrowed would help us grow our economy, even though we suspected it may not. It was a gamble to borrow money in your name strictly for our own benefit, but we are happy with the way it turned out. The things that you will directly benefit from, such as roads, bridges and other infrastructure – well we ignored those things. They were just barely good enough to last for our lifetimes so we just figured you could take care of that when you grew up too.
It’s true that we could have shown restraint, but we did not. As you played with your blocks on the floor, we went 16 years non stop borrowing nearly two billion dollars per day. Some of us contested the wanton spending, but it was actually a thinly disguised attempt to win support. Nobody ever actually cared about your future. As you grow up and learn that the world revolves around money, please don’t forget to pay off what we spent.
When you become more mature, perhaps eventually have a family of your own, you will discover that above money, time is actually our most prized asset. The richest man in the world cannot buy one more day when the grim reaper comes. Unfortunately most of your time will be wasted trying to earn the 25,000,000,000,000 we spent. Just kidding, i’m sure as your read this that amount has tripled.
We suggest that you laughingly refer to the crisis as “kicking the can down the road,” and attempt to defraud your own children. Now is no time for morality.
Sincerely,
Everyone Adult in the United States
